Overview
“Ara Roa” – A Māori word that translates to “The Long Road.” It is used to describe the adventurous and less travelled path one can take exploring our world. I couldn’t think of a more apt name for this stunning Nordhavn 60 as she epitomises taking the long road anywhere her owners’ desire.
Marley Cutbush from Nordhavn Yachts Australasia and Flagship International is proud to present the 2013 Nordhavn 60 “Ara Roa” to the Market.
The Nordhavn 60 is the most popular model in the extensive Nordhavn range and for good reason. An evolution of the extremely popular Nordhavn 55, the N60 offers all the 55 delivers but with outdoor living and space in mind. Her additional cockpit, saloon and boat deck space really changes the game for the N60 and makes her a true expedition yacht that is usable in all climates and conditions in absolute comfort.
Seldom do N60’s come on the brokerage market in the Asia Pacific region. Even more rare is a 60 of such impeccable presentation that has been lovingly owned and cared for since she broke her mold.
Ara Roa, an Australian registered ship, was originally delivered to her Australian owner in the USA and named “Last Samurai.” Her commissioning owner came with vast Nordhavn cruising experience and the design and options fitted to Ara Roa reflect this intimate knowledge and make her a truly spectacular vessel.
“Ara Roa” represents a rare opportunity to secure not only an extremely well presented Nordhavn 60 ready for immediate delivery, but a vessel that has been owned and operated by experienced Nordhavn owners whose extensive knowledge is evident in every aspect of the initial customisation and ongoing upkeep of “Ara Roa” and her systems. The level of safety, redundancy, operational ease, and utmost luxury that “Ara Roa” delivers is a result of loving ownership throughout her relatively short life.
She gave the original commissioning owner the opportunity to explore North America’s northwest coast from Dana Point up through Canada and into Alaska before returning down the Baja peninsula to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. From here she changed custodians before completing the mighty Pacific Crossing. Taking on the Pacific Ocean is no small feat and an accomplishment that one might thought not possible in a 60ft motorboat, but for a Nordhavn 60 like “Ara Roa”, this is the challenge she was built for. Excited to get miles under her keel, the listing broker, Marley Cutbush, was asked by her new Australian Owner to deliver her to Sydney, Australia. Excited for the adventure of a lifetime Marley spent a few weeks in Mexico learning the vessel and her systems, passage planning and provisioning for the voyage. With the new owner now onboard, she was steamed effortlessly from Cabo to Nordhavn HQ in Dana Point before the 15-day passage to Hawaii. From Honolulu, it was a relatively short run down to Fanning Island in the Line Islands, where the crew enjoyed local island life, surfing, fishing and exploring in some of the most remote islands in the world. From there down to Samoa, then on to Fiji, Vanuatu, New Caledonia then on to Sydney, Australia. This staggering adventure was completed in utmost comfort and safety and without hiccup. As the owner at the time put it “You don’t look after a Nordhavn, it looks after you.”
The current owners have owned Ara Roa for the last four years. Initially purchasing to ‘escape’ the COVID lock-down restrictions of their home state Victoria, they discovered ‘apartment style’ live-aboard luxury. As foreign travel was restricted or plain disallowed, they spent the first couple of years travelling up and down the Queensland coast from Brisbane to Lizard Island as well as long trips to the remote Coral Sea cays including Willis Island, Herald islands, Diamond Islets and others. With cruising paths opening up again, they took Ara Roa to NZ and then circumnavigated the North Island over the ensuing year. The next stop was Tonga / Fiji – with an extended time in the remote Lau chain of islands. Ara Roa’s most recent blue-water crossing saw her returning to home base, Gold Coast, Australia.
This summary of the adventure and genuine expedition highlights the sheer capability of Ara Roa and the places she can take her owners. Perhaps more importantly, it also reinforces that Ara Roa’s systems are now all proven. It’s not a vessel that “you could take through the Pacific” She is a vessel that has done it and is ready to go again. It’s time for her new owner to capitalise on the robust design and proven capability of Ara Roa and enjoy her with refinements complete, all systems embedded and upgrades completed, ready to take her new custodians on the adventure of a lifetime.
“Ara Roa” is the popular 3 cabin layout boasting a palatial full beam master cabin and private ensuite, along with a luxurious queen VIP cabin, also fully ensuited. This allows for 2 couples to cruise in absolute comfort and privacy. The pilothouse cabin also boasts a double bed really making her unique family yacht. Her highly upgraded interior is luxurious with its cherry grain wood, Teak and Ebony floors, custom granite countertops, Italian granite floors in wet areas and galley and extensive refrigeration and storage utilisation.
Ara Roa is truly a world cruiser designed to operate in all conditions. Her electrical system is a 50htz system which is designed to operate easily in the Asia-Pacific, Australia, NZ and Europe; however, this system, when coupled with the multiple shore power receptacles, transformer and 50/60Hz chargers means “Ara Roa” operates with all systems at any dock in the world. Her ABT track stabilisers and full keel loaded with 5 tonnes of lead ballast will ensure she is stable and comfortable and capable of taking on conditions that no other production motorboat would even consider.
“Ara Roa” effectively presents like new in every respect. He modest engine and generators hours are really all that would set her apart from a significantly younger boat. Therefore, she offers a unique opportunity to immediately own one of the most popular Nordhavn models in the current production line and she is ready and proven to take her new owners on exciting adventures anywhere in the world.
Her outstanding qualities and value are exemplified by meticulous maintenance and redundancy of critical extended voyaging systems.
Like all Nordhavn’s the quality and craftsmanship evident in the interior joinery work is incredible and “Ara Roa” is a fine example of this having been spec’d in a Cherry wood with a satin finish. This gives the vessel a warm and elegant feel while the light carpets and modern upholstery, and newly replaced headliners throughout brighten the interior and complements the contemporary feel of the vessel. The settees are all covered with ultra-leather material for high durability and a luxurious feel.
You enter the salon by way of a large Dutch watertight door, and one is immediately taken back by the immense volume and warm feel. Even from the dock it’s hard to fathom she is only 60ft with a towering boat and commanding ship-like presence.
All who step inside a Nordhavn 60’s saloon comment that the first impression is that she’s a significantly larger vessel. The asymmetric walkway down the starboard side not only gives the saloon an incredible beam, but the high deckheads and large picture windows give the saloon a feeling of volume and light. There is a large dining settee and lounge to port and a pair of Ekorne recliners and ottomans to starboard with ample clever storage beautifully crafted in under the windows. The open plan galley is seamlessly incorporated with a breakfast bar on the saloon side, which allows for inclusion and comfortable seating on custom weighted stools that don’t budge, even in a heavy sea way.
Just forward of the salon and down two shallow steps is the galley. It's designed with practicality and style in mind as well as still being connected to the saloon space - thanks to the large opening forward. Custom granite countertops cover all work surfaces, including the large splashback, providing a sleek and durable workspace. The large sub-zero fridge/freezer ensures you have plenty of space for fresh food, and cool storage for extended cruising. The finest Miele appliances are fitted along with great custom storage spaces and a very useful trash compactor.
Forward of the galley is access to the incredibly luxurious owner’s suite. Fitted with custom enlarged portholes over the queen size bed. There are side tables with storage and lamps as well as a dresser with a mirror and plenty of cupboards and drawers. Ara Roa was also fitted with additional soundproofing on the galley bulkhead for complete privacy and comfort. The owners' ensuite is to starboard and finished with a granite vanity, ample storage, a head, and a separate over-sized shower stall, with a seat for when in unfavourable conditions, that is fitted with 2 separate shower heads and mixers. There’s also an oversized portlight for airflow, natural light, and a shower with a view (when you wish).
Forward of the owner's suite is a second access door which takes you up a stairway to the bridge or forward to the VIP cabin. This area could be mistaken for the master cabin - with a desk to starboard, an island queen bed with under-storage drawers. The portholes on both sides, deck hatches above and a huge amount of headroom really make this expansive suite feel spacious, warm and inviting, ensuring guests are onboard in utmost comfort. To port and aft there is an ensuite with a granite vanity, storage, head and a separate shower stall.
Under the VIP cabin is an incredible Cofferdam. The current owner has customised the storage in this area to house an extensive list of genuinely valuable and important spares and dry stores for long cruises. This area also houses the two freshwater pumps for complete redundancy and access to the bow thruster, hot water system, freshwater manifold and ducted water-blaster.
Moving back aft, the engine room is accessed via a spiral staircase just to the starboard of the galley. Once down here we’re first greeted by the utility room, a vital part of the Nordhavn N60 solution for long voyages. This area includes extensive storage, and stainless work bench, an upgraded Miele washing machine and separate Miele dryer, and a large chest freezer that can hold enough frozen goods to last a two-month voyage without provisioning. It's all about practicality and making sure you’re well-prepared for extended adventures.
Moving aft the engine room is accessed through a Diamond Sea Glaze watertight door. The first impression of the engine room is “clinical” Boasting headroom of 5’7” at the entrance, the access through this machinery space is phenomenal. Everything is laid out neatly and accessed easily. It's like a well-organized workshop, with sight gauges, a dry exhaust system, and top-notch insulation. Every detail is designed for efficiency and safety. The unique feature of Nordhavn is the easy access, well-designed and perfectly labelled systems in the engine room. “Ara Roa” is powered by a single 340-horsepower John Deere 6081 engine, perfect for long-distance cruising and efficiency. The engine is a dry exhaust running up through the top of the on-deck stack, so there's no saltwater running through the engine. Cooling is provided by the keel cooler which reduces hull protrusions and saltwater cooling system maintenance. Exhaust supports are mounted to isolation mounts, and the entire exhaust is wrapped in custom insulation blankets.
On the starboard side is the 65-horsepower Lugger diesel wing engine with a separate shaft driven by V-drive transmission, turning a Gori collapsible propeller, so it's all independent of the main shaft—fuel, electrical, and controls— thus completely redundant.
The engine room also houses an upgraded 20kw Northern Lights generator, fully encased in sound shields. This generator is so quiet and vibration free you have to stop and concentrate to detect it running while in the saloon or guest areas.
The fuel manifold, oil change manifold and vessel machinery systems are all designed to be easy to maintain, easy to access and simple to operate.
Aft again of the engine room is the enormous lazarette. Accessed through another Diamond Sea Glaze watertight door. It includes a generous hatch to the aft deck and houses the upgraded house battery bank and connections, air-con chiller systems, dive compressor, 600 gallon per day water-maker, access to the steering gear, and stern thruster, electrical systems and ample storage for toys, dry stores and spares. There’s also an emergency tiller and miscellaneous storage areas both to port and starboard.
The pilothouse is accessed via a beautifully crafted spiral staircase with cherry walls, teak steps, and a stainless-steel handrail. This area is designed with an open plan layout. The STIDD helm chair is central and commanding over the forward-raked bridge windows, navigational systems and machinery operations. The starboard side of the bridge panel provides convenient access to the AC and DC breakers and electrical input selections as well as easy display of your current and voltage input and outputs.
Right behind the helm is the third cabin. With the addition of the day-head on this deck, this cabin can be used as a third guest suite or a Captain's Cabin. It's perfect for those long journeys when you need to stay close to the action but still want to relax in comfort.
Access to the decks from the pilothouse is offered by port and starboard Dutch watertight doors. The first thing you notice when stepping out is that you're protected from the elements by the optional side awnings surrounding the pilothouse, both port and starboard, allowing for air flow through the pilothouse in wet conditions as well as protection from the elements. The Portuguese bridge offers protection and easy access to the foredeck while also housing the starboard wing station (also found on the transom). These are fitted with controls for the engine, thrusters, anchor and steering, providing excellent visibility for close-quarter manoeuvring or anchoring if required. There are also large bosuns lockers perfect for storing additional lines, washing equipment and power cables. From the Portuguese bridge, the foredeck is accessed through a beautifully crafted access door with a stunning fully polished stainless steel pantograph hinge.
Here on the foredeck, we have access to our upgraded Maxwell 4000 windlass with upgraded 130m of high tensile chain and an upgraded 110kg Rocna anchor. This impressive ground tackle is specified to allow anchoring in remote areas where anchoring in over 35m of depth is required.
Moving aft to the boat deck, we find this has been extended fully aft on this new layout of the Nordhavn 60, which gives us more space for tenders and toys as well as better cover down in the cockpit. “Ara Roa” features a steelhead ES1500 davit to allow for easy launch and retrieval of the tender. The tender is certainly impressive. Having just been serviced and re-upholstered, she is ready for adventure. Often an overlooked part of an expedition vessel, a tender becomes your car to get around, get to shore, go fishing, go diving or explore shallow lagoons. “Ara Roa” boasts the a highly spec'd Swift centre console tender with a 60hp Yamaha outboard. She has a Bimini to protect you from the elements while exploring. She has a towing rail perfect for wakeboarding or pulling the kids on an inflatable biscuit or toys.
Moving up from the boat deck, the flybridge is fitted with a recently re-upholstered U-shaped settee and another helm station with redundancy navigation equipment and vessel controls. These are all under the protection of a hardtop fitted with downlights and allow access to the masthead equipment if required. The optional 2 STIDD helm chairs have also been re-upholstered and are the perfect vantage point to take in the fresh air and gaze over the amazing cruising grounds on your exploration. This birds-eye view allows great visibility forward for spotting dolphins, or hazards when in remote areas or challenging reef navigation.
Her outstanding qualities and value are exemplified by meticulous maintenance and redundancy of critical extended voyaging systems. Regrettably recent and serious health concerns have meant the owners have had to draw a line in the sand on boating at this time. Their philosophy is that a Nordhavn is meant to be actively used and that they simply cannot give her that commitment as they concentrate on recovery. Therefore “Ara Roa” unexpectedly offers her next custodian a unique opportunity to immediately own one of the most popular Nordhavn models in the current production line - and she is ready and proven to take her new owners on exciting adventures anywhere in the world.
